I was lucky enough to attend the UCMMA event on Saturday 19th September - commissionined by Loaded magazine to cover a feature on Jack Mason. My first MMA encounter!
A very busy evening for myself and Jeff (features Editor) in what was a lively event to say the least. A collection of excellent, brutal fights with Jack and Alex coming on at 10pm.
Keep an eye out for the next Loaded issue for the full story … a few pictures to wet your appetite!

UCMMA Jack Mason vs Alex Reid
Sunday, September 20th, 2009Darren Sutherland RIP
Thursday, September 17th, 2009I had the pleasure of shooting one of Darrens early pro fights and also met him spookily in Leicester Square a month or so ago - what a superb athlete and top gentleman. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this sad time.

Harrison Promotions - Saturday 25th July - St Helens - Fight Report
Friday, July 31st, 2009An opponent from Ghana is becoming something to approach with caution, even more so if you throw in the knowledge that he has also challenged for a Commonwealth title. This was the level of opposition faced by Martin Murray and his stablemate, Craig Lyon on the Oliver Harrison promotion at Sutton High Leisure Centre in St. Helens. Craig’s opponent lived upto the reputation, Murray’s did not. Thomas Awinbono was clearly no match for Prizefighter Middleweight champion, Murray. He certainly proved he had a good chin but he was outclassed and Murray coasted to a points victory. A focussed Murray stepped in with double jabs and a solid hook to the body gave Awinbono a taste of what was to come from early in the fight.
The Ghanaian had little answer to the consistently better work from Murray. He made an effort in the sixth round but his flurry of shots earned him a flush right in return. A further rally in the next round was answered with an uppercut. The 80-72 score accurately reflected Murray’s superior boxing.
Classy, Craig Lyon, had a much tougher test in Isaac Owusu.
This proved to be a fast paced contest between two clever boxers. Lyon edged it with heavier shots and rapid-fire combinations but the final verdict of 60-54 for Lyon did not reflect how hard he had to work to earn his victory. Both were dangerous and a little reckless which probably resulted in the head clash which left Lyon with a nasty cut on his left cheekbone and another over the eye which later required twelve stitches. Both fought well, Lyon fought better.
Scott Mitchell also had a tough fight against the much heavier, Chris Woolas and his clear points win was hotly disputed by the Woolas team. Woolas was certainly the busier of the two and his corner felt he at least deserved a larger share of the 55-60 verdict. Fellow heavyweight, Rob Beech had a much less debatable win over Mark Lewis, and now remains unbeaten in three fights. Oliver’s ample supply of heavyweights also includes sparring partners, Howard Daley and Martyn Grainger who ended up fighting each other. Howard made a determined effort but was well outpointed by Martyn who scored well to the body.
Steve Harkin started fast against Jason Smith, moving forward, delivering hooks to the body and putting together combinations, not giving Smith time to get his shots off. He slowed a little as the fight progressed and threw single shots, favouring the solid right to the ribs but failing to follow up. That said, he won every round of this four round contest.
Light-middleweight, Tom Doran gave an impressive performance in his second outing and is certainly one to watch. Craig Tomes was unable to land a clean shot under the onslaught from Doran. He had to endure an extensive arsenal of hooks from both hands, an effective jab and uppercuts – and that was just the opening rounds! He had taken a lot of punishment by the final round when he went down on one knee under a barrage of blows. An uppercut on the inside and a good left hook gave Doran the final word and a 60-53 victory.
Justin Jones also performed well against Jamie Norkett in their four round light-heavyweight contest. He picked his punches well and penetrated Norkett’s high guard with his jab and demonstrated that he can slip shots nicely too. He deservedly won every round.
Thanks to Tracey Pollard for the fight report.
Hatton Promotions - Altrincham Fight Report
Thursday, July 16th, 2009Another successful Hatton promotion saw rising star, Scott Quigg stop his Romanian opponent, Ricardo Tanase.
Scott has established himself as a classy boxer but he doesn’t lack power either. He stopped his last opponent in five rounds and this time a tasty right over the top and a body shot ended the fight in the first round. Scott described it as “the best body shot I’ve ever thrown.” And it earned him his 15th straight win.
Mark Thompson dominated his contest with late sub, Latvian, Sergejs Savrinovics but it was another body shot that finished this fight early. Lefts to the body stopped Savrinovics in the fifth round.

Hatton’s Anglo-american proteges, Alfonso Vieyra and Adrian Gonzalez from Las Vegas both had to earn their victories. Alfonso learned a few lessons from the experienced, Sid Razak. Razak has only been stopped twice, once by the aforementioned Quigg and he lasted the distance on this occasion too but lost by 37-40 points. Alfonso’s, stablemate at Ricky’s Hyde gym, Adrian Gonzalez put Jason Thomas down with a quality uppercut in the opening round but Thomas rallied to give him a good fight. Adrian won every round on points.
James Barker made his debut for Brian Hughes against Pavels Senkovs, who has already demonstrated that he can deliver a quality right. He did so again but not before James had outboxed him in the opening rounds. James was dropped by a flush right in the fifth round but recovered well and the resulting verdict of a draw was somewhat surprising.
Barker’s Collyhurst teammate, Matthew Askins faced Sale’s, Mark Nilsen in a fight that started on a fairly even keel and ended on the deck, for Nilsen at least. He was dropped when Askins pulled a straight right out of the bag at the end of the fourth round.
Bristol’s Martin Robins fought a rematch with Swansea’s Chris Brophy. Their last meeting ended in a draw and this one nearly did too but Robins edged it on points.
The next Hatton promotion will be on August 21st at the Manchester Velodrome and will feature the ring return of Ricky’s old mate, Michael Brodie who has been absent for four years.
